    Our Dry Eye Centre

Melbourne residents suffering from the symptoms of dry eye are welcome to organise a consultation and examination with our dry eye specialists. The symptoms of dry eye disease vary from individual to individual but may include:

The eyes feeling sore, gritty, scratching, burning, or stinging

These uncomfortable sensations are common to dry eyes. Patients may also identify their eyes as feeling tired and heavy, especially later at night.

Uncharacteristic redness around the whites of the eyes or the rims of the eyelids

The inflammation associated with dry eye can cause unsightly red eyes, which many patients find cosmetically unattractive.

Variable vision that fluctuates with blink

Vision that goes in and out with each blink may be indicative of dry eyes as the layer of tears is unstable over the surface of the eyes, causing blurriness between blinking.

A filmy, sticky sensation around the eyelids

A dysfunction of the oil glands surrounding the eyelids often contributes to dry eye disease and can cause a sticky feeling around the eyes.

    Watery eyes

Counterintuitively, dry eyes can cause wateriness. This is due to the dehydrated eye’s surface triggering a reflex to release more tears from the lacrimal gland.

Our dry eye clinic in Melbourne at Eye Laser Specialists’ state-of-the-art practice is equipped to not only diagnose your specific type of dry eye but also to offer therapeutic treatments that go beyond off-the-shelf lubricant eye drops. Research and understanding of dry eye disease are ever advancing and our dry eye specialists endeavour to remain at the cutting-edge of research and technology in order to provide you the most relevant treatments.

While your consultation will be tailored and guided by your reported symptoms and presenting signs, you can expect our dry eye specialist will:

    Take a detailed history

There is a significant number of factors that can contribute to dry eye disease. Identifying exacerbating factors will help in forming your dry eye treatment plan. Factors may include those in the environment such as air conditioning, your current medications that may be affecting tear production, your vocation such as computer use, and any coexisting medical conditions that are associated with an increased risk of dry eye.

    Conduct a thorough eye examination

This will involve tests specifically to assess your type and degree of dry eye, and is likely to be quite different from other eye exams you’ve had in the past. Your ophthalmologist may instill certain diagnostic dyes into the eye to visualise areas of dryness or damaged cells; you may have an assessment of tear production with the insertion of short strings or strips of paper over your eyelids; the doctor may also assess the position and function of your eyelids as these are important for the production and retention of tears. There may also be certain devices used to assess your tear quality and stability.

    Make recommendations for treatment

Some of the most effective treatments for dry eye must be conducted in the clinic with a trained specialist while other remedies can be safely done at home. Depending on your type and severity of dry eye, your eye doctor will recommend one treatment over another, and will likely suggest several treatments to use together. There will also be a discussion around lifestyle or environmental modifications you can make to improve your dry eye.

We are proud to have proven dry eye treatments at our disposal. These include IPL laser therapy and Lipiflow thermal-propulsion technology. These therapies compliment usual dry eye therapies and help relieve the burden of ongoing dry eye care.

You don’t need to live with sore, red, gritty, and dry eyes. If you’re ready to take active steps in the treatment of your dry eye, contact Eye Laser Specialists directly or call us to book an appointment with our dry eye specialist.
