You don’t need to look far for cataract and refractive surgery in Melbourne. Armadale Eye Clinic offers experience and expertise in state-of-the-art facilities.

Cataracts are often quoted as a normal part of ageing. Due to the natural age-related decline in the transparency of the crystalline lens inside the eye, cataract surgery in Melbourne and around the developed world is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures.

The point at which a cataract requires surgery and extraction will vary from person to person. The rate of progression of a cataract is not always linear with time and some patients may notice a rapid decline after experiencing several years of stable vision with a cataract. Symptoms associated with a cataract include:

    • Blurry, hazy, or filmy vision
    • Difficulties with activities such as reading fine print despite wearing glasses, and driving at night
    • Increased glare sensitivity
    • Altered colour perception
    • Increased difficulties with vision in dim lighting

In Melbourne, cataract surgery is widely available both through the public and private systems. Armadale Eye Clinic prides itself on experienced ophthalmologists who are committed to providing the utmost care in cataract and refractive surgery for Melbourne residents and those from further communities.

    The Process of Cataract Surgery

Melbourne residents with cataracts will undergo surgery one eye at a time, one week to one month apart, usually starting with the eye with worse vision. For our patients travelling from rural Victoria, you may be eligible to shorten this timeframe between procedures for convenience but this will depend on several safety factors that will be discussed at your consultation with our eye doctor.

One of the important topics to be discussed at your initial appointment with the ophthalmologist will be the selection of the lens for cataract surgery. Our Melbourne patients are often surprised to hear there are a number of options of intraocular lens (IOL) implants available to replace their hazy cataract lens. Our Melbourne surgeons are experienced with all intraocular lenses and are more than happy to discuss your suitability for each option.

    Monofocal IOLs

The traditional IOL, these lens implants correct for only one focal length for clear vision, long or near distance. If you demonstrate good adaptability, you may be eligible for monovision, where one eye is given a monofocal IOL for long distance and the other for short distance.

    Multifocal IOLs

Designed to offer multiple areas of focusing power through each lens, multifocal IOLs can minimise the need for both distance and reading glasses. There are a few designs of multifocal intraocular lens for cataract surgery. Our Melbourne specialists will discuss the pros and cons of multifocal IOLs with you at your consultation

    Accommodative IOLs

These IOLs have the ability to flex in shape to mimic some degree of the eye’s natural control of focus.

Cataract surgery in Melbourne eye clinics take a total of about 15-20 minutes per eye and are associated with very high rates of success and low rates of complication. After the procedure, you will attend for a series of review appointments to ensure your eye is healing as expected.

    Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive lens exchange is a similar procedure to a cataract operation but without a cataract in the lens. Melbourne patients who are experiencing presbyopia, the natural age-related decline of near focus, and those with high degrees of long-sightedness (hyperopia) tend to be the most suitable for this refractive surgery technique. Patients who are found to be ineligible for refractive surgery techniques such as LASIK and PRK may be suitable for refractive lens exchange instead.

Like the cataract extraction procedure, refractive lens exchange removes the biological lens of the eye and replaces it with an IOL, one which corrects for the eye’s prescription. The IOL can be monofocal, multifocal, or accommodative, and will offer you the life-changing benefit of reducing your dependency on glasses and contact lenses.

If you’re experiencing difficulties from cataracts or are simply interested in freedom from glasses and contacts with refractive lens exchange, book your first appointment with our experienced surgeons now. Call us or email us.
